Top 5 Smartphones 2017

With about 2 months remaining in 2017, we have actually seen all the top flagship releases planned for 2017. I think it's time to take a review of the smartphones released in 2017 and try to ascertain the best the world of smartphones had.

In this article I am going to list and discuss some smartphones I feel where actually the best 2017 offered.

DISCLAIMER: This list is based in my own opinion, it may not be accepted by all. You are free to drop your own opinions  in the comment box below.

Below is a list of smartphones I think were the best in 2017;

1. Samsung Galaxy Note 8

The Note 7 was Samsung's most  popular device, for all the wrong reasons. it's battery fiasco made the headline in most tech blogs.

Samsung galaxy note 8

The story behind the Note 7 fiasco also made the Note 8 popular, owing to the fact that people were actually waiting to find out if Samsung could manufacture another note device without a battery that exploads.

The rancour the Note 7 battery fiasco brought to Samsung didn't depeat or dampen Samsung's plan of producing a better Galaxy note device.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is the first Samsung device to feature a 6.3 inch display a reminisce of the S8 which also had a 6.2 inch stretched display.

The note 8 features a 6.3 inch quad HD super amoled  curved infinity display with a screen resolution that is a reminisce of the S8 , I say reminisce because the 2960x 1440 resolution.

The Note 8 is also the first Samsung smartphone to feature dual rear cameras with the implementation of a 2X zoom lens just like the one featured on the iPhone 7.

Tests carried out on the Note 8 shows that the Note 8 does a better job when it comes to 2X zoom than the iPhone.

The Note 8 also features a stylus pen that has a tip as thin as that of a ball pen.

The Note 8 can take up to 100 notes  on screen without unlocking the device.

The Note 8 is also the first Samsung smartphone to officially launch with 6 GB ram for it's base model.
The Note 8 is powered by a snapdragon 835 processor.

For those who care, The Note 8 still features a headphone jack, a feature which may not be found in it's successors.

Why is the Note 8 my favourite?
Firstly, the fact that Samsung could regain the prestige they had on the Note smartphone series is a big plus to them.

Secondly: The Note series from Samsung has over the years featured smartphones that have been a standard to all smartphone designs.
The Note 8 is  to me is the prefect example of what a 2017 flagship should be.

It features top notch hardware specifications and design that isn't much of a risk for a 2017 smartphone.

It has an excellent software that compliments the long/stretched display it has.

The only issue here is the price.
But anytime that is this good, should have a complimentary price.

The Note 8 if you ask me, is actually worth your $1000 instead of the iPhone x.

2. iPhone X

The iPhone x upon it's release had a lot of controversies, controversies that may end up being reasons people shouldn't buy the iPhone x or trust iPhone.
Iphone x

The biggest and first problem apple had with the iPhone x, is the fact that it's so called advanced face scanner failed about four times during presentation. This fact has being blamed on the carelessness of the software engineer who was tasked with making sure their chief software engineers face was well entrolled for  presentation.

Secondly, the iPhone x had being referred to as a parody that imitates features found on smartphones that existed before it.
The Advanced face recognition system, the Augmented reality kit features it has where already existing in most Android phone before the iPhone x.

Putting aside the fact that the iPhone x is referred to as a parody and the fact that the iPhone x is a parody, the iPhone x means alot to the apple mobile team and fans. This is due to the fact that the iPhone x bears a lot of new features that have being absent in apple phones from the past.

First and the most obvious of all features is it's approach to a near bezeless display on the iPhone x.

The display on the iphone x is a 5.8 inch  near bezeless amoled display with a screen resolution of 2430 X 1135.

The near bezeless display featured on the iPhone x made apple to do away with it's traditional touch ID button and seek for another option for security.

This is where the new advanced face scanner comes in.

The advanced face recognition system also known as Face ID is powered by the Dot projector, infrared camera and flood illuminator.

The dot project shoots 30,000 dots across your face to be sure it is you and not a well constructed 3D mask or a picture of you.

Since the face ID is the main security on the iphone x you might be probably be wondering how you will be able to unlock your device in the dark.
Well that's were the flood illuminator comes into play. The flood illuminator is an invisible infrared light that helps identity your face even in the dark.

The infrared camera reads the dot pattern , captures an infrared image and sends the data to the secure enclave in the A11 Bionic chip featured on the iphone x.

The face ID is so good at recognition that it will recognise you even in beards, a hat and as I previously said , with the help of the flood illuminator it will recognise you even in the dark.

Thirdly, The iPhone x is also made of glass, making the iPhone x and the iPhone 8 the first apple phones to feature wireless charging

The new bezeless display and the advanced face recognition system is actually the main new features embedded in the new apple phone.
iPhone also included the new A11 bionic chips in the iPhone x.

At the end of the Note 8 section I said you should spend your money on the note instead of the iPhone x. But the iPhone x isn't a bad idea at all.
Putting aside the apathy I have for apple phones I actually think the iPhone x is a very nice phone.

But the fact that iPhone cannot share files via Bluetooth or share files easily to Any computer without an app from apple puts me off. The ease at which Android phones do these things cannot be easily forgotten.

Should you still purchase the iPhone x? Off course you should, that's if the ease of file transfer and the customizability featured on Android smartphones isn't a big deal to you.

3. Huawei Mate 10

Huawei mate 10

The Huawei Mate 10 is actually the last planned flagship that was  released in 2017. Being the last released flagship, expectations concerning the mate 10 where really high.

Unfortunately Huawei didn't let us down. For a standard version, the Huawei mate 10 bears the biggest battery amongst all flagship devices released in 2017, A 4000mah battery.

The Huawei mate 10 is a 5.9 inch smartphone with an LCD display, a screen resolution of 2560 X 1440 and screen density of 499 PPI.

The mate 10 was built with a combination of aluminum and glass.

Hardware specifications includes;
Huawei kirin 970 processor, 4GB of ram, 64GB of storage with option for micro SD card expansion.
It features a dual camera system at the back which consists of a 20mp monochrome camera with an apature of f/1.6 and a 12mp RGB camera. All these components are powered by a 4000mah battery, which is 21% bigger than the one on the Galaxy note 8 and 37% bigger than the one the iPhone 8plus.

This smartphone features top notch 2017 specifications, but amongst other 2017 flagship devices, it's battery capacity makes it to stand out. Because it's actually difficult to find a flagship device these days with such a battery capacity.

4. Nokia 8

Nokia over the years have ridden on the back of the nostalgia  horse 🏇, but the effect of the nostalgia was gradually fading away.
Nokia partnered with HMD who began producing Android smartphones which were intended to contend with 2017 flagships and fit into the status quo.

Nokia 8

This plan gave birth to the Nokia 8 which is Nokia's first flagship device after a very long time.

The Nokia 8 from afar doesn't really look so 2017 like, but a close assessment of the device reveals the features that makes it a contender in 2017.

The Nokia 8 features a 5.3 inch quad HD IPS display with a screen resolution of 2560x1440.

Going deep into the core hardware specifications of the Nokia 8 reveals a snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of ram, 64GB of onboard storage with 256GB option for micro SD expansion.

The Nokia 8 comes with a special bothie feature that lets you use your rear and front camera the same time when taking pictures and recording videos.

The Nokia 8 may not look so 2017 like physically, but the fact that it features bezels which are not so obvious, a water proof build and a headphone jack together with it's top notch hardware makes its a 2017 essential device and a Best buy.

5. One plus 5

If you have being reading my articles on smartphones for a while now, you would have noticed the one plus 5 in most of them, and that is because I love this smartphone alot.

One plus 5

The one plus 5 is a smartphone that features 2017 hardware specifications with a price that doesn't compliment.

The one plus 5 features 5.5 inch IPS display.

The one plus 5 is powered by snapdragon's flagship 835 octa-core processor chip, 8 gigs of LPDDR4X ram, 128GB of internal storage and a 3,300 mAh battery with it's native dash charge mechanism.

Where the above variant costs about $500,
there is also a variant of the one plus 5 with 6gb of ram and 32GB of internal storage which costs $479.

The one plus 5 as I earlier said is a smartphone that features top hardware specifications with a price tag that isn't complimentry.

The reason I love the one plus 5 once again, is just simple. It features the kind of hardware tech enthusiasts will fancy in 2017 at the same time retaining a $500 budget.
